Excellent and challenging platformer."I remember this quite fondly; at the time, I was writing for Micro Mart magazine, and had received this after Egg Head III and some other Cronosoft titles. Happy days. This game had something of a feel of the excellent Rainbow Islands, at least in its cute look. As a Lumberjack named Jack Lumber, the aim is to hack down a number of trees within a tight time limit (leaving little room for error, nor too much time for exploration), whilst avoiding, or taking out, manic roamers and flying pests. The control system takes a little while to get used to, especially walking up and sliding down the inclines strewn throughout the levels. Each time you chop into a tree, your axe loses its felling ability, so you must sharpen it at regular intervals. It takes a while to learn the best route for each level based upon the locations of each tree to fell and where the sharpening stones are placed. Overall, a very good and playable game with increasing difficulty and sweet graphics. Excellent that this saw a physical release too." Shaun Bebbington - 05 December 2023
Product DescriptionHOP 'N' CHOP
By The Shaw Brothers, for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K, on cassette.
Colourful arcade game, written in 1995, by the Shaw Brothers.
But what matters at the end of the day is that Hop 'N' Chop really is fun to play. The game is not as simple as it first looks, the time limits are harsh and I would've liked a little more time (even level 1 is cutting it fine). However despite a difficulty level that causes multiple obscene outbursts I found myself wanting to play again. 7/10
